Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc is a Chenin Blanc drawn from the chalk of the Brézé hill, including a parcel directly below the Château de Brézé.
Saumur sits on the tuffeau limestone of the middle Loire, and the hill of Brézé is its most celebrated white-wine terroir. Romain Guiberteau’s village white comes from younger vines in Clos de Guichaux and Clos des Carmes, old vines from the Bas de Pentes at Brézé, and a splash of Les Chapaudaises at Bizay. Clos des Carmes sits on the chalky mother rock of the hill just below the château. Plantings range from 1935 to 2012, so there is real old-vine material in the blend. All Guiberteau whites are pressed as whole bunches and ferment with indigenous yeasts. This wine was historically raised entirely in tank; more recent bottlings have been partly matured in tronconique oak and used barrels to broaden the textural range and reduce the risk of reduction. This release did not go through malolactic conversion.
Approachable now and likely to reward eight to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled john dory, roast pork or a washed-rind cheese.
