Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Brézé 2015

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Brézé is a dry Chenin Blanc from the hill that has long been Saumur's most celebrated site for white wine.

The Brézé hill rises south of Saumur, a mound of tuffeau limestone honeycombed with cellars cut into the rock, and its whites were traded and ranked highly well before the modern appellation system existed. Romain Guiberteau farms several parcels across the hill and blends them for this bottling, all Chenin Blanc on thin soils over the limestone, hand picked at low yields in more than one pass through the vines. Pressing is slow and gentle, fermentation runs on indigenous yeasts in barrel, and the wine then rests a long time on its full lees, undisturbed, in wood that is mostly older. Sulphur is added sparingly. The style is dry, taut and built on structure rather than on any oak flavour.

Closed in youth and better after a few years, or with a decant. Serve at 10–12°C with roast pork, turbot or a mature Comté.
