Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Clos des Carmes 2014

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Clos des Carmes is a dry Chenin Blanc from a walled parcel on the Brézé hill.

Brézé is the limestone hill south of Saumur whose whites were ranked alongside the finest in France long before the twentieth century, and its walled clos were laid out by the château that sits at its foot. The Clos des Carmes is one of them, a small parcel of Chenin Blanc on shallow soil directly over tuffeau, farmed by Romain Guiberteau from his base at Mollay. Yields are low, the fruit is picked by hand in successive passes, and the wine is pressed slowly, fermented with indigenous yeasts in barrel and left on its full lees for an extended period without stirring. Sulphur is used sparingly and there is little or no new oak, so the concentration comes from the site rather than the cellar.

Tight when young and best given several years, or a decant. Serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a hard sheep's milk cheese.
