Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Le Bourg comes from a single hectare of 1940s Chenin Blanc on the Brézé plateau, below Clos des Carmes.
Brézé, south of Saumur, is the limestone plateau whose Chenin Blanc was once ranked with the finest whites in France, and Romain Guiberteau has been central to its revival. Le Bourg is one of his newer bottlings from the terroir and, despite the name, has nothing to do with the Le Bourg at Chacé made famous by Clos Rougeard. His hectare slopes towards the village on sandy clay over soft tuffeau limestone, planted in the 1940s. The density of these old vines, combined with the site’s pungent minerality, gives a wine of real intensity and deep-set tension. The fruit is pressed as whole bunches and ferments naturally, and the wine ages twelve months in used barrels before bottling. It shows more slate-like minerality than Guiberteau’s other Brézé cuvées.
Tight on release; give it three to five years and expect it to hold much longer. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, scallops or a mature hard cheese.
