Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Brézé Blanc 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Guiberteau's Brézé is a Saumur Blanc from two parcels of pre-war Chenin Blanc within the Brézé climat, bottled here in magnum.

Brézé is a limestone hill south of Saumur whose wines were once ranked alongside the greatest of Burgundy and Bordeaux, and its modern revival owes much to the Foucault brothers and to a younger generation of growers including Romain Guiberteau. The fruit comes from vines planted in 1933 and 1952, most of it in the lieu-dit Bourguenne, with about a quarter from the historic Clos de Carmes. Guiberteau now works with larger-format barrels from several coopers, favouring thick-staved demi-muids and casks from Clos Rougeard's local artisan cooper. Brézé spends two years in barrel, half of it new, followed by six months in tank, an élevage that suits the wine's density and coiled energy. In style it leans towards the textural richness of fine Meursault.

A magnum from a powerful year, this needs time and will run for two decades. Serve at 10 to 12°C with roast chicken, scallops or veal.
