Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Brézé Blanc 2021

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Brézé Blanc comes from two parcels of mature vines planted in 1933 and 1952 within the fabled Brézé climat.

Chenin de Brézé, as it was once known, produced wines held in the same regard as the greatest vineyards of Burgundy and Bordeaux before the twentieth century reduced the hill to obscurity. Its modern revival owes a great deal to the Foucault brothers at Clos Rougeard and, more recently, to Romain Guiberteau. Most of the fruit here comes from a lieu-dit called Bourguenne, with a quarter drawn from the historic Clos de Carmes. Guiberteau now works with larger-format barrels from several coopers, preferring the thick-staved demi-muids of Atelier Centre France for this wine and also using barrels from Dussiaux, the local artisan cooper who supplied Clos Rougeard. Brézé spends two years in barrel, half of it new, and a further six months in tank, an élevage lengthened in recognition of the wine's coiled energy.

Worth three to five years before opening and capable of fifteen or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast turbot, veal in cream sauce or an aged hard cheese.
