Description
Domaine Guiberteau's Chacé is the estate's first Saumur-Champigny, from a quarter-hectare of Cabernet Franc planted in 1948 and bottled only in magnum.
The town of Chacé lies five kilometres north of the Brézé hill, in the heart of Saumur-Champigny; Guiberteau's other vineyards are classified simply as Saumur, so this marks a first for the domaine. Chacé is familiar to followers of Clos Rougeard, which has its cellars there and farms its best-known vineyard, Le Bourg, on the same ground. Romain Guiberteau bought this quarter-hectare of old vines in 2016; they are rooted in sandy silt over limestone, and he calls the site un lieu spécial. Fewer than a thousand bottles were made, all in magnum, and the plan is to use the Chacé label only in exceptional years, with other releases going out as Saumur-Champigny in 750ml. Maturation takes the best part of three years in one- and two-year-old barrels, after which the wine rests a further 24 months before release. The style is floral and silky, with powdery tannins and a long, chalky close.
Ready now but with a decade or more ahead of it in magnum. Serve with roast squab, veal or a mushroom ragout at 16–18°C.
