Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Clos de Guichaux Blanc 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Domaine Guiberteau's Clos de Guichaux is a 1.4-hectare monopole in the Bizay terroir near Brézé, and one of Saumur's rising white vineyards, bottled here in magnum.

The clos lies in the small village of Épieds and has been well regarded for a long time. Its soils are the region's classic clay and limestone, but with only about 30 centimetres of topsoil before the roots reach pure chalky bedrock, which is where the savoury, mineral drive comes from. Guiberteau ferments and matures the wine for twelve months on lees in two- to four-year-old barrels — 600-litre, light-toast casks from Atelier Centre France and François Frères that had previously held the Brézé cuvée — followed by six months in tank. No new oak is used. The style is a high-wire act rather than a broad one: citrus, chalk and peppery spice over a transparent, tense palate, and in some years malolactic conversion is skipped, which sharpens the line further. It behaves much like a young modern white Burgundy and settles with air or time.

Worth five years and capable of far longer at this size. Serve with roast pork belly, grilled scallops or a leek gratin at 10–12°C.
