Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Clos de Guichaux Blanc 2020

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Clos de Guichaux Blanc comes from a 1.4-hectare monopole with barely thirty centimetres of soil over chalk.

Clos de Guichaux is a historically renowned walled vineyard in the Bizay terroir at Épieds, near the hill of Brézé, and it is a monopole of Domaine Guiberteau. The site is the classic clay and limestone of the region, but with only about thirty centimetres of topsoil before the roots reach the pure chalk bedrock, which is what gives the wine its savoury, mineral drive. It is quickly establishing itself among Saumur’s finest white sites. The Chenin Blanc is fermented and raised for twelve months on lees in two- to four-year-old 600-litre barrels, light-toast casks from Atelier Centre France and François Frères that previously held the Brézé cuvée, followed by six months in tank. Malolactic conversion did not take place in this cuvée, which leaves the palate taut and energetic.

Worth three to five years in bottle and good for a decade. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled john dory or a mature hard cheese.
