Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Clos des Carmes Blanc 2018

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Clos des Carmes Blanc is a monopole Chenin Blanc from one of the three finest clos on the hill of Brézé.

The Brézé hill in Saumur holds at least nine historic, clearly delimited clos, most of them still owned by the Château de Brézé. Three were singled out last century by Maurice Edmond Sailland, the writer better known as Curnonsky, and the Guiberteau family own one of them: the monopole Clos des Carmes, bought by Romain Guiberteau's grandfather in 1955. The 2.6-hectare parcel faces south, mid-slope on the belly of the hill, and was replanted with massale cuttings by Robert Guiberteau in 2004. Only 0.8 hectares, cropped at 30 hectolitres per hectare, go into this bottling, with the rest declassified into the Saumur Blanc and Brézé wines. The élevage matches the Brézé cuvée: whole-cluster pressing, indigenous yeast fermentation in new, one- and two-year-old oak, and 24 months on fine lees in cask. The wine is typically more tightly wound than the Brézé, so it rests a further year in bottle before release.

Give it time; it will improve for fifteen years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast turbot, veal sweetbreads or a mature goat's cheese.
