Description
Domaine Guiberteau Les Arboises is the estate's top red, from a monopole parcel of Cabernet Franc planted in 1957 on the Brézé hill.
Les Arboises is a subsection of the limestone-dominated hill of Brézé, long regarded as the finest terroir in Saumur and a renowned site for reds as well as whites. The parcel is rocky and chalky, and it gives graceful, mineral wines rather than powerful ones. The fruit is fully destemmed and fermented naturally in concrete, then rests for 18 months in a mixture of new, one, two and three-year-old barrels. Guiberteau now uses about one-fifth new oak, down from closer to half in his early releases. He ages this cuvée longer than his other reds, in barrel and in bottle, on the view that the site's more angular tannins need the extra time to settle.
Best given three to five years and will hold fifteen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, braised lamb or a plate of hard cheeses.
