Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Chapaudaises Rouge 1.5L MAGNUM 2018

Domaine Guiberteau Les Chapaudaises is a Saumur red from Cabernet Franc vines planted in 1948 on sandy tuffeau limestone, in magnum.

Les Chapaudaises lies in the Bizay terroir, in the village of Épieds, within half a kilometre of Saumur's prized hill of Brézé and next door to Guiberteau's monopole Clos de Guichaux, on the same sandy tuffeau. The vineyard is planted to a mix of Chenin Blanc and old-vine Cabernet Franc. One hectare of the Chenin is leased to Brendan Stater-West, Romain Guiberteau's right-hand man, and the remainder goes into the domaine's Saumur Blanc, but it is the 1948-planted Cabernet Franc that is the prize here. As across the range, the reds are handled with restraint, destemmed and raised in used Burgundian barrels so the limestone site rather than the wood sets the shape.

Approachable from two to three years and good for a decade or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck breast or a mushroom and lentil braise.
