Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Moulins Rouge, in magnum, is Cabernet Franc raised entirely in stainless steel with just five days on skins.
The Moulins label was created to give Romain Guiberteau's organic-in-conversion fruit a home of its own, separate from the village bottling. The vines sit chiefly at Montreuil-Bellay, on the limestone plateau south of Saumur, and the blend also takes in a healthy portion of old-vine fruit from a recently acquired parcel on the Brézé hill; vine age ranges from 10 to 80 years. The short maceration and the absence of oak are deliberate. The aim is an open, early-drinking wine at a more accessible price than the village Saumur rouge, and the method preserves the crunch and lift Cabernet Franc shows on these soils. It is racy and juicy, with red cherry, ground anise, ink and nettle character and a long, smoky close, and it carries more depth than the price and format suggest.
Drinking now and likely to hold five years or more. Serve at 16-18°C, or lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken or grilled capsicum.
