Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Moulins Rouge is the label Romain Guiberteau created for his organic-in-conversion parcels, made for early drinking.
Saumur’s red wines come from Cabernet Franc on the tuffeau limestone south of the town, and Guiberteau is one of the appellation’s benchmark growers. Les Moulins began, like its white counterpart, as a home for fruit from vineyards being converted to organic farming. The vines are mostly at Montreuil-Bellay, with a useful proportion of old-vine fruit from a recently acquired parcel on the Brézé hill, and they range from ten to eighty years of age. The winemaking is deliberately simple: just five days on skins and raising in stainless steel only, with no oak involved, so the wine keeps its crunch and perfume. The aim is a more open and immediately drinkable style than the village bottling, at a more accessible price, and it does what it sets out to do.
Drink now and over the next three years, lightly chilled if you like. Serve at 14-16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a mushroom tart.
