Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Moulins Rouge 2022

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Moulins Rouge is an early-drinking Cabernet Franc raised entirely in stainless steel, with only five days on skins.

Les Moulins began as a home for Guiberteau’s organically farmed grapes while they were still in conversion, and it has since settled into the range as the more open and less demanding of the two reds. The vines are mostly at Montreuil-Bellay, with a useful proportion of old-vine fruit from a recently acquired parcel on the Brézé hill, and their age spans 10 to 80 years. The winemaking is deliberately spare: a short five-day maceration and élevage in stainless steel only, with no wood at any stage, so the wine reaches bottle with its fruit intact and its frame light. The aim is a supple, accessible Saumur at a lower price than the village bottling, and the domaine describes this release as suppler and less angular than the one before it.

Drink over the next three to five years. Serve at 16°C, or lightly chilled, with charcuterie, grilled sausages or a tomato tart.
