Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Moulins Rouge 2023

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Les Moulins Rouge is an early-drinking Cabernet Franc created as a home for the domaine's organic-in-conversion fruit.

Romain Guiberteau farms at Mollay in the Saumur appellation and is one of the names behind the modern revival of the Brézé hill. This label was set up to make use of grapes from vineyards in conversion to organic certification, and it has stayed in the range. The vines are mostly at Montreuil-Bellay, with a healthy portion of old-vine fruit from a recently acquired parcel on Brézé itself, and range in age from ten to eighty years. The wine is raised entirely in stainless steel with just five days on skins, which is a deliberate choice: the aim is an open, immediate wine at a more accessible price than the village bottling. It is racy and crunchy in style, with more depth than the price point suggests and, unexpectedly for a wine made this way, the makings of a few years in bottle.

Drinking now and good for three to five years. Serve lightly chilled at 15-16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or grilled vegetables.
