Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge is pure old-vine Cabernet Franc from three parcels on the Brézé hill, bottled here in magnum.
Saumur is the limestone heart of Cabernet Franc in the Loire, and the Brézé hill is its most storied slope. Romain Guiberteau took over the family vines in the mid-1990s and, with the Foucault brothers of Clos Rougeard as an early influence, has become one of the names that define the modern appellation. This village red is drawn from three parcels planted between 1955 and 1957, on silty and sandy topsoils over limestone. The fruit is entirely destemmed and fermented naturally in concrete, then spends twelve months in large tronconique barrels, an élevage aimed at freshness and drinkability rather than structure. The result is the more fruit-forward of the estate's reds, and the logic here runs opposite to the whites, where the Moulins cuvée sits below the village wine.
Approachable now and good for five to ten years in magnum; serve at 16°C with roast pork, charcuterie or a herb-crusted rack of lamb.
