Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Arboises is a single-parcel Cabernet Franc from clay and flint soils on the Brézé hill.
Saumur's reds are Cabernet Franc grown on the tuffeau limestone of the Loire's right bank, and Romain Guiberteau, working from Mollay just outside Brézé, has done as much as anyone to raise their standing. Les Arboises is one of the parcels he bottles separately, on a part of the slope where a cap of clay and flint sits over the limestone; that topsoil holds a little more water and gives a red with more grip and darker fruit than the domaine's straight Saumur. The fruit is picked by hand, fermented with indigenous yeasts and a share of whole bunches, extracted lightly, and matured in used barrels so the oak stays out of the way. Sulphur additions are kept low.
Approachable now and likely to develop over the next several years. Serve lightly cool at around 16°C with roast pork, grilled lamb or a goat's cheese tart.
