Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Arboises 2015

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Arboises is a one-hectare monopole of Cabernet Franc planted in 1957 on the southern slope of the Brézé hill.

Saumur's reds are Cabernet Franc grown on the limestone country south of the Loire, and Romain Guiberteau has done as much as anyone to raise their standing. He took over the family vines at Mollay, in Saint-Just-sur-Dive, in 1996, having left law school, and learned much of his craft from Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard; the domaine now runs to a little over nineteen hectares, farmed organically from 2000 and certified AB in 2007. Les Arboises is his own walled parcel on Brézé's south-facing flank, on rocky sandy-silt over a chalky limestone bedrock. The fruit is sorted in the vineyard, entirely destemmed and fermented on ambient yeasts in concrete for two to four weeks, then aged eighteen months in barrel, most of it new, blended and rested in steel before bottling and a further spell in the cellar.

Firmer and more structured than the village red, and worth a few years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, grilled lamb or a goat's cheese tart.
