Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Motelles 2016

Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Motelles is a single hectare of Cabernet Franc planted in 1955 at Montreuil-Bellay, away from the domaine's Brézé parcels.

Saumur takes in a good deal of country south of the Loire, and Montreuil-Bellay sits towards its southern edge, where Les Motelles lies on sandy clay with gravel over limestone. That is a different foundation from the tuffeau slopes of Brézé and gives a red of its own character. Romain Guiberteau took charge of the family vines at Mollay in 1996, steered towards wine by Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard, and has since built the domaine to a little over nineteen hectares, farmed organically from 2000 and certified AB in 2007, with no synthetic treatments beyond sulphur, copper and essential oils. The grapes are sorted in the vineyard and completely destemmed, fermented with the yeasts they carry, and the wine is aged twelve months in barrels of two and three years, so the oak stays quiet, then filtered before bottling.

Fresh and savoury, good now with a little air and worth keeping a few years. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, roast pork belly or a plate of charcuterie.
