Description
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Motelles is a single-parcel Cabernet Franc bottled apart from the domaine's village red.
Brézé, south of Saumur, is a low hill of tuffeau limestone whose vineyards were mapped and ranked centuries ago, and Romain Guiberteau has spent his career reassembling and interpreting parcels on and around it. Les Motelles is one of those parcels, worked and bottled on its own so that its particular balance of soil depth and exposure can be read in the glass. The vines are hand picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts in a mix of whole and destemmed fruit, and extracted gently, with the cap handled lightly to keep the tannins supple. Ageing takes place in older barrels over the better part of a year, with low sulphur, before bottling. The style is fresh and savoury rather than dense.
Good now with a little air, and worth keeping for a handful of years. Serve at around 16°C with grilled lamb, roast pork belly or a plate of charcuterie.
