Description
Les Bressandes is one of Beaune's better-regarded premiers crus, and the Germain vines there were planted between 1960 and 1965.
Bressandes lies on the northern side of Beaune on a gentle east-facing slope of limestone scree and reddish clay, and it is generally counted among the stronger sites of the commune, giving Pinot Noir with more flesh and colour than the lighter plots nearer the town while keeping the perfume Beaune is known for. Domaine Henri Germain is a small family estate at Meursault, founded in 1973 and better known for its whites, which make up about three-quarters of the seven hectares; Jean-François Germain runs it today, with his daughter Lucie since 2018. The soils are ploughed and herbicide-free, and the picking is by hand at low yields. Reds are normally destemmed, whole bunches appearing only in exceptional years and then at up to a quarter, and they are raised in 228-litre barrels from Rousseau and François Frères with new wood limited to twenty or twenty-five per cent, then bottled with little or no fining or filtration.
Expect a wine that opens after a few years in bottle and holds for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, coq au vin or a mature hard cheese.
