Description

Domaine Henri Germain Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge comes from a clay-rich parcel in Les Battaudes planted in 1951, in a village now far better known for its white wine.

Chassagne-Montrachet was a red-wine village before it was a white one, and a good deal of Pinot Noir remains in the southern part of the commune towards Santenay, where the soils carry more clay and iron. Domaine Henri Germain makes only a small quantity here, from a parcel in Les Battaudes below the Abbaye de Morgeot on the Chassagne-Remigny boundary, planted in 1951. A proportion of whole bunches went into the fermentation and the wine was raised with only a small percentage of new oak, an approach that suits fruit of this age and keeps the perfume intact. The result runs against the reputation of Chassagne rouge as a sturdy, earthbound wine: it is lifted and scented, with finesse rather than weight, and it reads as a Germain wine before it reads as a Chassagne.

Ready within two years and good for eight to ten. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, mushroom dishes or soft washed-rind cheese.
