Description
Domaine Henri Germain Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is drawn from six parcels, most of them at the top of the climat where it abuts the Puligny premier crus.
Charmes is the largest of the Meursault premier crus, running along the lower and middle slope south of the village, and it is conventionally split into dessous and dessus, below and above. Germain has holdings in both, with his youngest vines here 35 years old, but the weight of his fruit comes from the upper section against the Puligny boundary. That position is the usual explanation for why experienced tasters so often find his Charmes the most Puligny-like wine in the range, with more cut and less breadth than Meursault normally offers. It is a wine that at its best stands comparison with many a Perrières, and it shows outstanding depth and layering even from cooler, later-ripening seasons. The domaine's approach is unshowy, with measured oak and long lees ageing.
Best given three to five years and good for a decade beyond. Serve at 10-12°C with lobster, roast chicken or scallops in butter.
