Domaine Henri Germain Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots 2019

Henri Germain's Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots comes from a quarter-hectare of thirty-five-year-old vines in the upper part of Le Poruzot Dessus, inherited from François Jobard.

Poruzots sits on the northern arm of Meursault's premier cru slope, at the point where the hillside begins to turn towards the east, and it tends to produce wines with an earthy, savoury cast alongside the usual Meursault weight. Germain's parcel lies in the upper section of Le Poruzot Dessus, beneath the Narvaux terroir, and came to the family through Jean-François Germain's father-in-law, François Jobard. Antoine Jobard is therefore both his brother-in-law and his neighbour in the vineyard, and both wines are shipped by Bibendum, which makes for an unusually direct comparison. The house style at Germain runs to whole-bunch pressing, barrel fermentation with a restrained share of new oak and a long, quiet élevage on lees. The result recalls the domaine's Limozin but with greater depth and more layers.

Best from three or four years and good for a decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled crayfish or a firm mountain cheese.
