Domaine Henri Germain Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots 2023

Domaine Henri Germain Meursault Poruzots comes from a quarter-hectare of thirty-five-year-old vines inherited from François Jobard.

Le Poruzot Dessus sits in the northern band of Meursault’s Premiers Crus, below the Narvaux lieu-dit, on stony ground that gives wines with a distinct earthy depth. Domaine Henri Germain’s 0.25-hectare parcel came to Jean-François Germain from his father-in-law, François Jobard, which makes Antoine Jobard both his brother-in-law and his neighbour in the vineyard; both estates are shipped to Australia by Bibendum, and comparing the two is one of the more instructive exercises available in Meursault. The cru itself is less famous than Perrières or Genevrières but produces layered wines with more flesh and depth than the neighbouring Limozin. Germain works with ripe fruit, long lees ageing and restrained new oak, letting the earthy character of the site show through rather than covering it.

Give it four or five years and expect it to hold for twelve. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, veal or a soft washed-rind cheese.
