Description
Domaine Henri Germain Meursault Les Chevalières comes from a chalky lieu-dit that runs as a direct extension of the premier cru band above the village.
Meursault is the largest of the white-wine communes of the Côte de Beaune, and its village vineyards vary enormously depending on where they sit on the slope. Les Chevalières lies high up, above the village and alongside Les Rougeots, on soils and at an altitude that closely match the neighbouring premier crus. As the hillside curves around the village the rows begin to turn eastwards, so the site grows cooler and rockier as it climbs towards Auxey-Duresses, and the wines carry more tension than the fatter Meursault cliché. Domaine Henri Germain is a small family holding in the village, now in the hands of Jean-François Germain, working with a deliberately restrained hand: whole-bunch pressing, a long, unhurried barrel ageing and a modest proportion of new oak, so the chalk of the site stays in the foreground.
Approachable after a year or two in bottle and worth cellaring for up to a decade. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, seared scallops or a gratin of chard.
