Domaine Henri & Philippe Jouan Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru 2023

Domaine Henri & Philippe Jouan Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru comes from a very small family holding in one of the Grands Crus of Morey Saint Denis.

Clos Saint Denis gave the village the second half of its name, adopted in 1927 in the fashion of the day, when Burgundian communes appended their finest vineyard. It sits on the slope above the village and is generally held to be the most refined of Morey's Grands Crus, less broad shouldered than Clos de la Roche next door. Philippe Jouan farms a small parcel here, having taken over from his father Henri, and works with hand picking, fermentation in open vats with indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction and ageing in used oak, keeping intervention to a minimum. Very little is made in any year, and the wine is allocated accordingly.

This deserves a decade or more in the cellar; serve at around 15 degrees with roast game birds, truffle dishes or a fine cut of beef.
