Domaine Hubert Lamy Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne Vieilles Vignes Rouge is a red from the heavier, lower-lying clay ground of a commune far better known for its whites.

Chassagne-Montrachet was historically a red wine village and still makes serious Pinot Noir from its lower climats, where dense clay-based soils suit the variety better than Chardonnay. This wine comes from a 1.06-hectare plot in the middle of the village planted in the 1960s. Olivier Lamy worked with roughly 80 per cent whole bunches, raised the cuvée in used barrels only, and left the wine unsulphured until bottling. His reds have grown steadily more precise over the past decade, with the same linear texture that runs through the domaine’s whites, and this is a clear example of that direction: darker-fruited, blackcurrant-leaning and framed by sweet spice from the stems rather than from new oak.

Drinkable now and good for eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, duck rillettes or a mushroom and thyme tart.
