Domaine Hubert Lamy Grand Cru Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Haute Densité comes from a 0.05-hectare parcel in the smallest white grand cru of the Côte d’Or.

Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is barely a hectare and a half in total, lying wholly within Chassagne-Montrachet at the southern corner of Bâtard-Montrachet. The Lamy family have farmed their handkerchief-sized holding here for three generations; it borders the south-east corner of Bâtard, immediately alongside the Domaine d’Auvenay plot. Olivier Lamy has taken planting density up to 24,000 vines per hectare, part of the high-density programme he began in Saint-Aubin. Unlike most of its grand cru neighbours, the wine sees no new oak at all: it is raised in a single 250-litre barrel some six years old, with part of the ageing in glass Wineglobe, and a second vessel of Wineglobe used if there is enough juice. The point of both is that the container adds nothing and the site is left entirely exposed.

A wine of unusual finesse, best from five years out to twenty. Serve at 10-12°C with lobster, turbot or a plate of aged Comté.
