Domaine Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chatenière Vieilles Vignes 2019

Clos de la Chatenière is a walled premier cru on the slope above Saint-Aubin, and the vines in Lamy's parcel went in in 1964.

Saint-Aubin sits in the side valley behind Chassagne-Montrachet, its premiers crus climbing steep ground where the topsoil is shallow and the limestone close to the surface. Lamy farms 1.25 hectares of the clos on a steep south-facing slope overlooking the hamlet of Gamay, on thin stony soil rich in iron oxides over hard limestone bedrock. The 1964 planting is what the vieilles vignes on the label refers to. Domaine Hubert Lamy was founded in 1973 and Olivier Lamy has run it since 1996, farming about 18.5 hectares by sustainable and organic means, with Guyot Poussard pruning and hand de-budding to hold the crop down. The fruit is pressed, left overnight to settle and fermented on ambient yeasts, then aged around 24 months on its lees in 300- and 600-litre barrels, mostly used, followed by six months in tank; sulphur goes in only during ageing.

Good from release and better with three to seven years. Serve at 10-12°C with scallops, roast chicken or a soft-rind cheese.
