Domaine Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chatenière Vieilles Vignes comes from a genuine walled clos that Lamy is effectively alone in bottling.

The clos sits inside the larger Chatenière vineyard in Saint-Aubin, ringed by dry-stone walls, and has long been the domaine’s best-known wine. Lamy farms 1.25 hectares here of 60-year-old vines. Chatenière is high and steep, facing south, set just back and around the bend from En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien. The 40 per cent gradient and the sheer quantity of rock in the soil mean it is worked entirely by hand. For practical purposes it is a monopole: Colin-Morey holds a small parcel but blends it into a wider La Chatenière bottling, so no one else labels the clos separately. The aspect delivers plenty of light while the 20 centimetres of rocky topsoil over hard, compact limestone keeps yields low and gives the wine its piercing mineral edge.

Fine-boned and worth three to twelve years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled crayfish, roast chicken or a young Comté.
