Description
Domaine Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière chez Edouard Vieilles Vignes Rouge comes from vines over fifty years old on the clay-rich lower slope of the vineyard.
Saint-Aubin is thought of as white wine country, but the lower reaches of Derrière chez Edouard hold more clay and have historically been planted to Pinot Noir. Lamy farms just under a hectare there, and this has long been the finest of his reds. The vines are past fifty years of age and give very small, ripe, intensely flavoured bunches, which is the main reason the wine has the depth it does. The site faces south-east behind the village cemetery, with the Chardonnay plantings, including the celebrated high-density parcel, higher up the slope. Winemaking follows the same unforced pattern as the domaine’s other reds, with whole bunches playing a part and used barrels only, so the fruit and the clay carry the wine.
Approachable now with eight to ten years ahead of it. Serve at 16-18°C with roast quail, veal chop or a plate of charcuterie.
