Description
Derrière chez Edouard is best known as a white-wine climat, but Olivier Lamy's old-vine red from its lower slope has long been one of the finest reds at the domaine.
Saint-Aubin lies in a side valley behind Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, and although its reputation now rests on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir was historically planted wherever the soils carried more clay. Domaine Hubert Lamy, run by Olivier Lamy at Saint-Aubin, works just under a hectare of vines on the lower part of Derrière chez Edouard, where exactly those heavier soils lie. The vines are over fifty years old and produce small, ripe, intensely flavoured bunches. The wine shares the finesse and mineral cut that mark the domaine's whites, with red fruit and floral character running through both nose and palate, and it shows how far Lamy's reds have come over the past decade.
Approachable young and capable of eight to twelve years. Serve at 16 to 18°C with duck, veal or a dish of roast beetroot and goat's cheese.
