Description
Domaine Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes is a premier cru white from a holding that includes vines planted in 1935.
Les Frionnes lies on the southeast-facing flank of the Saint-Aubin valley, next to Derrière chez Edouard but a shade warmer, so it is generally picked earlier. Domaine Hubert Lamy farms 2.4 hectares here across three plantings, in 1935, 1960 and 1985, giving the cuvée a core of genuinely old vines. The soils are old decomposed limestone and clay with a scatter of small rocks through the topsoil, which drains freely and radiates warmth back into the fruit. Olivier Lamy has built the estate's reputation on high vine densities, painstaking work in the vineyard and ageing in older barrels, so oak plays only a supporting part. Yields here are very small, the equivalent of 20 hectolitres per hectare in the season behind this release, well below the ceiling permitted even for grand cru, which concentrates what the vines do carry.
Approachable now and worth keeping five to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with turbot, roast pork loin or a hard alpine cheese.
