Description
Domaine Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien takes its name from the jagged stones cleared from the vineyard and stacked into walls.
A murger is a pile of stones or a rough wall built from rock dug out of a vineyard, so the name translates roughly as the wall of dogs' teeth, a reference to the fragmented, jagged limestone that covers the site. The vineyard is rocky and steep, bordering the Puligny premier cru of Champ Gain and sitting directly above the Montrachet grand cru, which is about as well placed as Saint-Aubin gets. The vines were planted in 1985 and are regularly affected by millerandage, which cuts yields and concentrates the fruit. Olivier Lamy has only 0.25 hectares here, so very little is made. The high altitude gives a wine of surprisingly silky texture and depth alongside the chalky drive that runs through the whole Lamy range.
Rewarding from three years and good for a decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled snapper, roast chicken or a gruyère tart.
