Description
Domaine Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien takes its name from the jagged stones cleared from its soil and piled into walls along the vineyard.
A murger is a heap of stones or a wall built from rock pulled out of a vineyard, and the name here translates roughly as the wall of dog’s teeth, which describes the fragmented, sharp-edged limestone scattered across the ground. It is a rocky hillside site bordering the Puligny premier cru of Champ Gain and sitting above Montrachet, literally on the Mont-Rachet, though standing in it the vineyard feels higher, more sheltered and wilder than either of its neighbours. Lamy’s vines were planted in 1985 and are consistently affected by millerandage, which cuts yields and adds opulence. He farms only 0.25 hectares, so quantities are very small. Despite the altitude the wine is always fleshy and deep, and it is the most hedonistic of the domaine’s Saint-Aubins, though never short of chalky mineral grip.
Generous from three years and holding twelve or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a rich fish pie.
