Description
Domaine Hubert Lamy Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Gravières Blanc comes from a 0.38-hectare walled plot on a thirty-degree slope of pure limestone.
The Clos sits at the northern end of Santenay near the Chassagne border, effectively a continuation of the Clos de Tavannes, and it has been prized for a long time: Dr Jean Lavalle's classification of Burgundy rated the vineyard a Tête de Cuvée, the highest category, as early as 1855. Lamy's vines tunnel quickly into limestone bedrock. Most of them are still reasonably young, and Olivier Lamy has been increasing planting density and replacing substandard material with massale cuttings taken from a parcel planted in 1968. A large part of this cuvée was vinified in glass Wineglobes, a vessel he has been steadily buying more of each year. He also makes a red from 0.28 hectares of Pinot Noir within the same Clos.
Drink from two years and over the following decade. Serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, grilled john dory or Beaufort.
