Description
Domaine Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec is an off-dry Chenin Blanc from a monopole clos sitting on barely a metre of soil over solid limestone, here in half bottle.
Vouvray occupies the right bank of the Loire just east of Tours, where Chenin Blanc is grown over tuffeau, the soft yellow limestone the region's cellars are cut into. Clos du Bourg is perched on the Première Côte directly above the town and is a Huet monopole; the domaine has farmed it since 1953 and bought it outright in 1963. It is generally reckoned the finest of Huet's three sites, ahead of Le Haut-Lieu and Le Mont. With only a metre of topsoil, the vines reach the limestone almost immediately, and the warmth of the site combines with that mineral base to give wines of both concentration and long life. Huet's demi-secs typically carry between 18 and 25 g/L of residual sugar, which the acidity renders barely more than off-dry.
Delicious now and capable of decades in bottle. Serve at 10-12°C with spiced Asian dishes, pork rillettes or a wedge of Roquefort.
