Domaine Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec 2023

Domaine Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec is a monopole on the Première Côte above the town of Vouvray, generally regarded as the greatest of the domaine’s three single vineyards.

Vouvray runs along the north bank of the Loire east of Tours, and the Première Côte is the band of limestone hillside carrying its finest sites. Clos du Bourg sits directly above the town; Huet has farmed it since 1953 and bought it in 1963. There is only about a metre of topsoil over solid limestone, so the vines tap into the mineral bedrock almost at once. The warmth of the site combined with that geology gives wines that hold intense minerality alongside generous texture and concentration, and that count among the longest-lived dry whites in Europe. Young, they are pent-up, chalky and racy; with age they move at a glacial pace towards something honeyed, buttery and savoury. Huet’s sec bottlings carry between 4 and 8 g/L residual sugar depending on the season, with recent releases nearer 3 g/L.

Rewarding now but built for fifteen years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with scallops, roast pheasant or a mature chèvre.
