Description
Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec is an off-dry Chenin Blanc from the estate's founding vineyard.
Le Haut-Lieu was the first land the family bought, in 1928, and remains the estate's home site: nine hectares on the Première Côte above Vouvray, on deep brown chalky clay the locals call aubuis. The yellow tuffeau limestone bedrock lies as much as four metres below the surface here, so the soil is richer and holds more water than at Le Mont or Clos du Bourg. That translates into rounder, more supple wines that show well young, and Le Haut-Lieu is generally the first of the three cuvées to come into its own. Longevity is not sacrificed for it; bottles from the 1940s are still drinking well. The demi-sec sits at a level of residual sugar that reads as barely off-dry against the acidity of the vintage.
Drinking now and capable of many decades. Serve at 10°C with Thai green curry, roast pork or a plate of washed-rind cheese.
