Description
Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux Museum Release is a sweet Chenin Blanc from the estate's founding vineyard, cellared at the domaine before shipping.
Le Haut-Lieu was Huet's first vineyard, bought in 1928, and sits with the house on a plateau with a slight southerly tilt at one of the highest points of the appellation, on the Première Côte. The nine-hectare plot lies on deep brown chalky clay known locally as aubuis, with the tuffeau limestone bedrock as much as four metres down. That richer soil gives rounder, suppler wines than the estate's other sites, generally the earliest of the three cuvées to come round, though they can still live for many decades. The moelleux style carries roughly 40 to 60 grams per litre of residual sugar, made mainly from passerillaged grapes dried on the vine rather than botrytised fruit, which is why these wines stay closer in weight to a fine Mosel than to Sauternes.
Drinking beautifully now and in no danger of fading. Serve at 8-10°C with roast pork and apple, blue cheese or a fruit tart.
