Description
This is a museum release of Huet's Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux, a sweet Vouvray from the domaine's home vineyard, held back at the estate.
Vouvray, on the north bank of the Loire east of Tours, grows Chenin Blanc on tuffeau limestone and produces everything from bone-dry wines to richly sweet Moelleux depending on the season. Domaine Huet works three sites, and Le Haut-Lieu, the clay-over-limestone vineyard surrounding the winery, is traditionally the roundest and most open-textured of them. This release comes from a season in which botrytis was scarce but dry, warm conditions at harvest allowed concentrated and mineral Moelleux to be made from ripe, healthy fruit rather than noble rot. It was bottled the following year with 52.2 grams per litre of residual sugar against a total acidity of 4.2 grams per litre, which explains the balance: this is not a thick, unctuous style but a fine, pure one with a crisp close.
It is drinking beautifully at twenty years of age and can hold for another decade or two. Serve at 8-10°C with blue cheese, a fruit tart or on its own after a meal.
