Description
Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Moelleux Première Trie is a sweet Chenin Blanc from the estate's founding vineyard, made only in the ripest years.
Le Haut Lieu was Huet's first vineyard, bought in 1928, and sits on the Première Côte on a plateau with a slight south-facing gradient at one of the highest points of the appellation. The nine-hectare plot lies on deep brown chalky clay known locally as aubuis, with the yellow tuffeau limestone bedrock as much as four metres down; the richer soil produces round, supple wines that tend to be the earliest maturing of the estate's three cuvées, though they can still age for decades. Huet's moelleux wines typically carry between 40 and 60 g/L residual sugar and are made mainly from grapes dried on the vine by passerillage rather than from botrytis. The Première Trie level is bottled only occasionally, in top years, from a berry-by-berry selection of the very ripest fruit, often botrytis-affected. The style is fine and delicate rather than heavy, closer in weight to a great Mosel than to Sauternes.
It is approachable young but will reward twenty years or more in bottle. Try it with aged Comté, terrine or roast pork with apple; serve at 8–10°C.
