Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec 2022

Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec comes from the estate’s founding vineyard, bought in 1928.

Vouvray is Chenin Blanc country, a plateau of tuffeau limestone above the north bank of the Loire east of Tours, and Huet has been its reference estate for close to a century. Le Haut-Lieu was the first vineyard the family acquired, a nine-hectare plot on the Première Côte planted on deep brown chalky clay, known locally as aubuis. Here the yellow tuffeau bedrock lies as much as four metres below the surface, so the soil holds more water and produces rounder, suppler wines than the estate’s other two sites. Le Haut-Lieu is generally the earliest maturing of the three cuvées and is usually the first ready to drink, though like Clos du Bourg and Le Mont it can be extremely long-lived; bottles from the 1940s are still in good order. This is the dry, or sec, bottling.

Open now for its supple side, or cellar for a decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C with pork rillettes, roast pork belly or a goat’s cheese.
