Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux 2022

Domaine Huet's Le Mont Moelleux is the sweet wine from the steepest and stoniest of the estate's three Vouvray vineyards.

Le Mont covers eight hectares on Vouvray's Première Côte, the bank of limestone-rich hillside vineyards overlooking Tours, and the Huet family bought it in 1957. Its argilo-siliceux soils are stony, with green mineral clays and flint over limestone, and they account for the tight structure and pungent minerality the site is known for. Set against Le Haut-Lieu it has less clay, of a different type, and considerably more stone, which is why Le Mont consistently gives the nerviest wines in the range and is usually reserved for dry and off-dry cuvées; a moelleux is made only when the fruit reaches the required ripeness. As across the domaine, the sweetness comes chiefly from grapes shrivelled on the vine by passerillage rather than from botrytis, so the wine holds a fine, taut frame rather than turning unctuous.

Drinkable now but likely to improve for decades. Serve at 8–10°C with a mature blue cheese, chicken liver parfait or roast pork.
