Description
Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec is a dry Chenin Blanc from the steepest and stoniest of the estate's three vineyards.
Huet bought Le Mont in 1957. The eight-hectare vineyard lies on the Première Côte, part of the band of limestone-rich hillside above the Loire looking towards Tours. Its soils are argilo-siliceux: stony, with green mineral clays and flint over the tuffeau limestone below. Compared with Le Haut-Lieu there is less clay, of a different type, and a great deal more stone, and this is the source of the tight structure and pungent minerality for which the site is known. Le Mont reliably gives the nerviest wines in the Huet range, which is why the domaine directs it mostly towards dry and off-dry bottlings rather than sweet ones. Dry Vouvray of this kind is among the longest-lived white wine styles in France, and it typically needs time to open.
Give it three to five years, then drink over the next fifteen. Serve at 10-12°C with pork rillettes, roast chicken or a goat's cheese from the Loire.
