Domaine Hunter-McKirdy 'Le Bois des Ormes' Pinot Noir 2023

Domaine Hunter-McKirdy 'Le Bois des Ormes' Pinot Noir is a light, energetic red from the village of Zellenberg in Alsace, made by one of the region's most closely watched new estates.

Domaine Hunter-McKirdy was founded in 2023 by Paul McKirdy, a Scottish winemaker who spent fourteen years as cellar master at Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, together with Jolene Hunter, who previously managed exports at the same estate. Their 3.5-hectare property lies in Zellenberg, between Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé, on Jurassic limestone-marl soils reminiscent of the Jura's Revermont; vines average forty-five years old and are farmed entirely by hand at high density. Grapes are picked according to pH rather than sugar ripeness and fermented spontaneously in old Burgundy barrels without added sulfites, with wines released as Vin de France rather than under Alsace's AOC rules.

A light, fresh, chillable red, it is best enjoyed with a slight chill and suits casual, food-friendly drinking.
