Description
Domaine Hunter-McKirdy Les Champs des Roches Riesling is a distinctive, minimal-intervention white from the village of Zellenberg in Alsace, made by one of the region's most exciting young growers.
Alsace, in north-eastern France along the eastern foothills of the Vosges mountains, is renowned for some of the world's most terroir-expressive aromatic white wines, its patchwork of granite, limestone and marl soils giving each village its own distinct personality. Domaine Hunter-McKirdy was founded by Scottish winemaker Paul McKirdy and South African-born Jolene Hunter, who farm old, densely planted vines on Jurassic limestone marl around Zellenberg entirely by hand and without synthetic inputs. Their winemaking favours spontaneous fermentation with ambient yeasts and gentle, traditional pressing, with wines bottled without added sulfites and released under the more permissive Vin de France designation rather than the Alsace AOC.
Bright, mineral and refreshingly dry, wines from this address are a lovely match for shellfish, charcuterie or simple, fresh cooking, and a great introduction to the new wave of Alsace winemaking.
