Domaine Jaeger Defaix Rully Rouge 2023

Domaine Jaeger-Defaix Rully Rouge is a village Côte Chalonnaise Pinot Noir from a single organically farmed parcel in the Vorot lieu-dit.

Rully lies at the northern end of the Côte Chalonnaise, a stretch of Burgundy that offers village wines at prices the Côte d'Or no longer can. The appellation is better known for its whites, but the reds from its clay and limestone slopes have a bright, red-fruited character of their own. Domaine Jaeger-Defaix bought this small parcel of Rully village vines in 2011. It sits in the Vorot lieu-dit, the vines are around 30 years old, and the site has been farmed organically for decades. The parcel gives small bunches with thick skins and concentrated juice. The fruit was entirely destemmed and the wine spent 12 months in seasoned oak barrels of one to three years, so the oak supports rather than marks it. Bottling is under Diam closure.

It drinks well now and over the next five to eight years, and suits roast poultry, charcuterie or a dish of mushrooms and lentils. Serve at 16 degrees.
