Description
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Selection Saint-Joseph Blanc Circa is a white from the long ribbon of terraced granite on the right bank of the northern Rhône.
Saint-Joseph runs for some 50 kilometres down the western bank of the Rhône, from Chavanay in the north to Guilherand near Cornas, on steep slopes of decomposed granite facing east across the river. Only a small fraction of the appellation is white, made from Marsanne and Roussanne, the two varieties permitted. The Chave family's home is at Mauves, in the historic southern heart of Saint-Joseph, and Jean-Louis Chave has been a leading voice for restoring the appellation's old terraced sites. Circa is bottled by J.L. Chave Selection, the négociant house he runs alongside the domaine. Saint-Joseph was recognised as an appellation in 1956, with a core of six communes around Tournon, before being extended north along the river in the decades that followed.
Best served lightly chilled with grilled fish, roast pork or a fresh goat's cheese.
