Description
Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley Volnay Vieilles Vignes is a village red Burgundy drawn from the domaine's oldest plantings in Volnay.
Volnay lies on the Côte de Beaune between Pommard and Meursault and makes red wine only, from Pinot Noir. It has no grand cru, but around thirty premiers crus, and a reputation for elegance that goes back to the dukes of Burgundy, who held land in the village. Vieilles vignes has no legal definition in France, so the phrase rests entirely on the grower's own judgement; older vines generally carry smaller crops and root more deeply, which tends to show in concentration. The Bouley family has farmed here for generations, and Thomas Bouley now makes the wines with his father Jean-Marc. Replanting a parcel means waiting decades for that maturity to return, which is why such bottlings tend to be made in small quantity.
It suits roast duck, game birds or mushroom dishes, and it usually shows best from about five years after the vintage.
